Sustainable living series with Rob Greenfield
(Films For Action) The series documents Rob Greenfield’s off the grid bike ride across America on a bamboo bicycle where he practiced sustainable living to the extreme. In 4,700 miles of cycling he used just 160 gallons of water, burned less than one gallon of gas, never turned on a light switch and created only 2 pounds of trash. That is 80x less water, 200x less trash, 600x less fossil fuels, and 1,000 times less electricity than the average American! Plus he ate nearly 300 pounds of food from grocery store dumpsters to prove just how much perfectly good food is being wasting in the USA.
His actions were extreme but in this series the viewer will learn how your daily actions affect the world around you both near and far. The episodes are food, waste, water, transportation, and energy and each episode informs on the topic in an inspirational and fun way. By the end of the series the viewer will know the basics behind sustainable living and what they can do to live more sustainably without going nearly to the extremes that Rob did on the journey.

Sustainable living E1 | Food: local, organic, unpackaged, food waste
Episode 1 is food and documents Rob’s efforts to cross the country eating only local, organic, unpacked food, or food that was going to waste. You’ll learn about how your choices at the store impact the environment, animals, and your own health. The problems behind our globalized food system, animal agriculture, and processed foods among other issues are covered. The video ends with the simple actions you can take to eat a more planet friendly diet and feel good about what you eat.
Sustainable living E2 | Waste: zero waste, the 5 R’s, composting
Episode 2 is waste and documents Rob’s efforts to cross the country eating creating almost zero waste. The average american creates 4.5 pounds of trash per day and he created just 2 pounds the entire summer. That’s 200 times less trash than the average American. Along with inspiration you’ll learn what you need to know to live a near zero waste life including the 5 R’s, composting, and many other tips to go zero waste. Plus you’ll learn about the impact of stuff being created, the process what happens to trash once it’s in your trash can or recycle bin, and litter in the environment.
Sustainable living E3 | Water: consumption and conservation
In this episode Rob lives off a leaky fire hydrant in New York for five hot summer days to demonstrate how much water is waste. You’ll learn about how your water usage at home impacts the environment, animals, and your own health. It covers how much water the average person uses around the world, how it gets to you, and where it goes after you use it. The video ends with the simple actions you can take to eat to use less water and reduce your environmental impact.
Sustainable living E4 | Transportation: cycling, walking, public transportation, car sharing
In this episode Rob lives cycle 4,700 miles across the USA and burns just one gallon of fossil fuels. You’ll learn about how much car ownership costs in the USA and the financial and health benefits of riding a bike more and driving less. The video ends with the simple actions you can take to reduce your environmental impact from transportation.
Sustainable living E5 | Energy: the dirty truth
In this episode Rob lives cycle 4,700 miles across the USA using only electricity from his portable solar panels. He managed to use 1,000 times less electricity than the average American. He plugged into just 5 outlets in 104 days and never turned on a single light switch. The truth is that a vast majority of electricity in the USA is dirty energy. You’ll learn about where your electricity probably comes from and the destruction it causes. The video ends with the simple actions you can take to reduce your environmental impact from electricity.
