A global celebration: 50 years of “Why can’t we be friends?
In honor of the 50th anniversary of WAR’s legendary album and iconic anthem, “Why Can’t We Be Friends?”, Playing For Change (PFC) is proud to present a powerful new Song Around The World. This collaboration brings together the remaining original members of WAR with over 30 musicians from across the globe, creating a rendition that transcends both borders and generations.
A message for our times
Just in time for the holidays—and at a moment when the world may feel more divided than ever—this global movement serves as a reminder of a simple, enduring truth: music has the power to connect us, heal us, and act as a beacon for global solidarity.
“From New Orleans to South Africa, voices and instruments unite in the universal language of rhythm. This project proves that fifty years later, the message of friendship is timeless.”
Why this matters
Music is more than just art; it is a pathway to unity and hope. Whether it’s the rhythm of the Agogô from Brazil or the classic harmonica riffs that defined a generation, this collaboration shows that we are all more alike than we are different.

Playing For Change
Playing For Change (PFC) is a Certified B Corp (Social Purpose Organization) created to inspire and connect the world through music, born from the shared belief that music has the power to break down boundaries and overcome distances between people. The primary focus of PFC is to record and film musicians performing in their natural environments and combine their talents and cultural power in innovative videos called Songs Around The World. Creating these videos motivated PFC to form the Playing For Change Band—a tangible, traveling representation of its mission, featuring musicians met along their journey; and establish the Playing For Change Foundation—a separate 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting music programs for children around the world. Through these efforts, Playing For Change aims to create hope and inspiration for the future of our planet. To learn more, visit https://playingforchange.com
